Memorial
Subject: The Wall of the Dead Place: The War Memorial, Canberra. Comment: For about six months leading up to our Modern History trip to the war memorial in Canberra, I had been reading a lot of war poetry, doing a bit of modern history war-related study, doing a few Society and Culture "the meaning of war" kind of things, and I'd come to the conclusion that although war is a horrible, crap, pathetic, thing .. .. something which really epitomises the human condition and the infantile bickering which never ceases.. umm.. yeah, although war is one of the most horrible things in our world, the amount of courage required to go to war, was impressive, and that if war ever arose in which Australia was fighting for a cause that wasn't Vietnam, Afghanistan or the conquest of another nation, something like WWI or WWII, I'd sign up in a non-combatant role, maybe as a medic, or as a supply truck driver or something. We went on a tour of the memorial and we got to this wall that had like, every name of every Australian who had died in a War, well, I think it's about as complete an official list as you'll ever find. Anyway, I walked along this wall with a friend of mine, and I started telling her how like, amazing a photo would be if it was just if we got up close to the wall and yeah .. anyway, after I took my photo, it struck me that I had missed the entire point of the War Memorial. Sure, it was about the bravery of these guys, and indeed, glorifying them for dying, and even those who lived through the wars, because they were in many ways defending freedom, and good stuff. ... ... but these memorials and things serve as a reminder to us that they shouldn't have had to die. War should never happen, it's not a matter of appeasement, but a matter of not allowing the seeds of hatred to be planted in anyone's heart... .. I like the inverted photo look.. Remember, one senseless death is one too many. Rating: 8.5 / 10 |
